I am looking for an event idea that I could hold in the school in December. I want it to be something that will bring some school spirit to the school that I am at. I have some students that can not celebrate Christmas so I am trying to decide whether to do something that involves a christmas/winter theme or go a different direction. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Reynold. Yes, this is definitely something we need to consider as Educators. We want to ensure that our events promote inclusion. At our school we run a couple of events in December that are fun, popular, festive and inclusive. 1) Holiday Talent Show or Winter Talent Show- This can be held during the afternoon (if you are guranteed time from your admin) or during lunch hour. We run it during lunch over the course of three days. Each day we have a different theme: Day 1) Singing, Day 2) Dancing, Day 3) Instruments. The leadership students would be in charge of advertisements and sign-up. They would run "auditions," and put the schedule together. This is a very fun event and exposes excellent student talent. My students also choose a local charity to donate the money they raise from donations. Another idea is to run a "Holiday Spirit Week," each day would be something the school can do to build spirit and community. The students come up with great ideas like: Festive Sweater day, Winter Candy Grams and Winter PJ Day (This is always a hit). This year I am taking my students to local skating rink for our annual "Winter Skate." This is an event for all three leadership classes at our school. The Leadership 10 class organize games and ice breakers at the beginning, they all dress in 'winter colors,' and we have hot chocolate at the end and have a round circle, "What we are thankful for" talk and appreciation.
