Thank you Erin and Josh. I also enjoyed the conversation. I would love to collaborate and discuss further. Please let me know the best way to do this. I would be happy to attend more sessions. This is a great professional development experience.

John - Absolutely, that is a great question. I agree and you are completely right. We need to do more than just provide the physical activity opportunity. I loved learning about the TGFU model in university and I am implementing TGFU in my classes this year. I find the learning is so rich. The tactical questions that students can answer continue to amaze me. I truly see the learning piece in physical education. I have also taught a traditional model and in my experience, I do not find the learning as rich and instead I relate it more to the recreational services. I find myself asking the same questions daily about Physical Education (as you mentioned below). Erin - Absolutely, I agree. We cannot just teach physical literacy without teaching health literacy. That sounds great, so how exactly are these units structured? How do the topics relate back to physical movement/fitness?

Stephanie- I think we would all agree that topics such as bullying, harassment, healthy and unhealthy relationships are relevant for our students and definitely apply to physical education. I think the new movement is showing us that not only are we covering components of "Physical Literacy," but also "Health Literacy" - How one obtains, understands and acts upon information related to Health. At our school, we are working collaboratively to design our health units whereby we have our units focus on the topics above, but we also relate it back to our bodies through physical movement/fitness.

As a physical educator I also ask the teachers I speak with this common question: "If our mandate as PE teachers is to provide physical activity opportunities to students, what does that do to the rigor of our profession? How does this differ from recreational services? If we are to focus on enabling physical activity in youth, what happens when the PE teacher is removed? What are the students left with in terms of an educated mind in developing their own healthy lifestyle?" I ask these questions not with any preconceived answers, but rather to dissect what it means to be a PE teacher and what does it mean for our students to become educated in our area

Erin - I would love to collaborate on any idea/concept. At this point, everything is new and we are diving right into it. We are learning from our experiences and will be able to make changes where we see fit. In order to cover stress management and anxiety, I had the students share where they feel their stress and anxiety and what strategies they use to manage their stress and anxiety. Students then share out to the class and we try each strategy and rate its effectiveness. They write a small reflection on their top 3 strategies. This is all done before I introduce yoga next week with a guest instructor. We then have a recently graduated nurse with a speciality in psychoeducation. She is coming in to talk to the students about strategies as well.

This is why subjects like Planning 10 and the current HACE K-9 will be dissolved and the learning outcomes will be attached to the most appropriate subject areas
