Summer institutes offer a lot of opportunity for choice, from 2-3 day non-credit offerings (like the Self-Regulated Learning institute) or intensive courses that span 1-2 weeks. You taught one of these last summer, right Erin?

Some educators have told me that they prefer to engage in professional learning in the summer. We're in the midst of planning quite a number of opportunities for 2015. You can check out what was offered last year to get an idea: http://pdce.educ.ubc.ca/workshops-institutes/summer-institute-archives-2/

There are options to engage in shorter opportunities (2-3 days - like our Self-Regulated Learning institute last year), or courses that span 1 - 2 weeks.

Some educators have told me that they prefer engaging in professional learning in the summer. There's a lot of variety for pro-d during the summer at UBC. We'll soon have our 2015 offerings available, but you can also take a look at some of our past institutes: http://pdce.educ.ubc.ca/workshops-institutes/summer-institute-archives-2/

For those not wanting to jump into a MEd just yet, there are also Diploma and Certificate programs: http://pdce.educ.ubc.ca/diplomas-certificates/. These can increase expertise in a chosen specialization. As one example, the Kindergarten Instruction Certificate provides a 15 credit option to learn more about the ECE context. Here's a link to course options: http://earlychildhood.educ.ubc.ca/programs/certificates-early-childhood-education#Kindergarten_Certificate.

Great question! Many of our programs are offered online or take place face-to-face in school districts. For instance, the MEd in Home Economics Education (HEE3) is a fully online program, with the next cohort starting in September 2015. This is a part time MEd that can teachers can pursue while they are teaching. Interested participants can take part in one of two info session to learn more about this option – these are scheduled for Dec. 9th and Jan. 15th. Here's the direct link with more info: http://pdce.educ.ubc.ca/master-home-economics-heel-program/

We know that it’s important for teachers to continually engage in professional learning opportunities. It’s a way to stay connected to current research, to connect and learn with/from our colleagues, and to hone particular skills to create the best possible learning environments for our students. Beyond this, many credit options for professional development can also help educators upgrade their TQS salary category.

Our office coordinates many of the pro-d opportunities offered by the faculty, including Masters in Education degrees, diplomas and certificates related to particular topic areas, and summer learning opportunities (institutes, courses, conferences, etc.). A good place to start learning more is through our website at http://www.pdce.educ.ubc.ca.
